Deaf and Low Hearing Passengers

P&O

P&O are able to offer hearing loop facility at Southampton cruise terminals and at the reception desks on board.  In addition they provide an infrared hearing support system within a large number of their theatres and show lounges - compatible headsets are available from reception.

A limited number of wireless visual alert systems and textphones are available on board.  The textphone system is subject to availability of telephone lines on board.  The textphone will enable them to alert a passenger to any important announcements concerning the cruise and in the event of an emergency.  Please note the visual alert system will reduce surface space in the cabin.  This equipment can be requested via the disability questionnaire.

P&O in-cabin emergency video offers closed captioning and British sign language translated version should a passenger wish to watch a DVD in their cabin.  Subject to available they can provide access to a DVD player and a DVD library, which contains closed captioning. Please speak to reception for further information.

Should someone wish to book a P&O organised shore excursion, they will endeavour to work with their local agents in advance of a cruise to obtain written commentary, but this may not be possible in all instances.

Customers with sensory impairments are welcome, but be aware that access to the facilities on board, gangway access and tenders ashore can be difficult.  It is recommended that anyone who is hard of hearing or has vision impairments should always be accompanied by a fit and able companion to guide and assist them.  However if someone particularly wishes to travel alone they can speak to the Customer Welfare Team on 0203 4512585.

The Sky, Sun and Pride of America all have staterooms that are hardwired for deaf and low hearing guests which includes a visual-tactile alert system to alert the guest if there is a knocking at the door, telephone ringing, alarm ringing or smoke detection.

On those ships where staterooms have not been hardwired, a portable kit is available upon request in your stateroom that includes a visual-tactile alert system.

Individual or group emergency drill for all deaf and low hearing is available upon request.  Pagers are available upon request on all NCL cruise ships to all deaf and low hearing passengers for ship announcements and a manual for the same can be provided in advance.

Assistive listening devices are available on all ships in main theatre's.  Closed optioned televisions are available for your stateroom.  Closed option movies are available on the 'New Movie Release' channel.  A DVD player maybe requested if a guest wishes to bring their own DVD's from home.

Sign language interpreting services maybe provided for deaf guests if that is their primary means of communication.  A request for sign language interpreting should be made with the Access Desk at time of booking through the special requirements form that can be obtained from the access desk, but no later than 90 days prior to sailing.  Requests are subject to a number of considerations including but not limited to the availability of interpreters and cabin space.  Sign language interpreters maybe provided on cruises that depart from and or return to the United States.  Make every effort to contact the access desk in advance of your cruise at least 90 days for interpreters.  A request for an interpreter less that 90 days notice may still be granted but cannot be guaranteed.

TTY phones are available on board all ships except Norwegian Spirit that use handy phones and text messaging.  The guest can request a phone in their stateroom to be replaced with a TTY phone and this will enable them to communicate with guest services desk staff by telephone.
